Messiah University’s Department of Safety is urging students to remain vigilant and take advantage of campus resources, particularly when walking at night.

Concerns about poorly lit walkways and transportation delays have raised questions about student safety. In response, the department continues to emphasize awareness and communication.

The campus safety escort service is available to all students and typically arrives within five to six minutes of a call. However, officers note that response times can vary depending on the clarity of directions.

“One of the most important things is to be as specific as possible when you call,” said Director of Safety David Neuenschwander. “If we don’t know exactly where you are, it’s harder to find you. Communication is key and makes a big difference in how fast we get to you.”

To improve responses times and increase visibility, the department is working to expand its team. Recruitment efforts are ongoing to address staffing shortages.

Another area of focus for campus safety monitors are deer-related accidents. Since August, no incidents have been reported according to the department’s records. However, if students call 911 instead of campus safety, the department cannot track those cases or take preventive measures.

“If you are feeling unsafe, call dispatch,” Neuenschwander said.. “If they’re not aware of the situation, they can’t address the issue. We can also call 911 for you in case of an emergency to prevent future incidents.”

Safety officials stress the importance of personal awareness at night. They encourage students to avoid distractions, check their surroundings before getting out of their car, and trust their instincts.

“Situational awareness is key,” Neuenschwander said.. “Don’t walk with your head down, distracted by your phone. Before you get out of your car, take a second and look around and if you feel unsafe, call dispatch.”

Students can contact Campus Safety’s emergency dispatch line for immediate assistance at extension 6565 for emergency on-campus and 6005 for non-emergency on-campus calls.
