As permanent as a tattoo is, the meaning doesn’t have to be. Senior marketing major Bailey Groff has found this to be true with her personal journey with her tattoo. She shares how the meaning of her tattoo changes with the eb and flow of her continuously unfolding life story.

What is your tattoo?

I have a tattoo on the inside of my ankle that says “here i am”.

When did you get your first tattoo?

I got my tattoo in August, 2018.

What does your tattoo mean?

I always wanted a tattoo that has multiple meanings so that as I grew, the meaning could change with me. “here i am” means a couple different things. First, it means being present where I am and with whoever I’m with, and to practice being vulnerable and authentic in my relationships. It is also a reminder to be in God’s presence and surrender every part of who I am to Him. It helps me to remember to be open to what God is calling me to do.

What is unique about your tattoo to you?

My tattoo is unique to me because of all the things it could mean. Even through the last eight months, I have found new meanings in my tattoo. It can be the start of “here i am, send me”. It can also mean “home is wherever I am” because home isn’t just one place for me. Home is where I am and who I am with. “here i am” is found in a few Christian songs too.
